Organic Gardening Compost |
Organic gardening goes hand in glove with organic gardening compost, you need good organic compost to supply your garden with the natural enzymes and nutrients needed to feed your plants. Using organic gardening compost is the natural way to improve the texture and aeration and also helps the soil to hold water more efficiently.
Adding organic compost to the soil is creating healthy soil. Think of it as giving nature a helping hand because composting is what happens in nature already it just takes longer if left to nature. All living plants go through the same life cycle they grow they die they decompose and become fertilizer for the start of the next cycle.
Using land to grow specific kinds of plants whether it's flowers shrubs trees or vegetables they all need good rich soil to grow in and the only way to make sure you have good soil is to ad fertilizers to it occasionally. Instead of using synthetic or chemical fertilizer build yourself an organic gardening compost heap and use the compost to enrich your soil.
To achieve your organic gardening compost is easy if you follow a few simple rules. Build a compost bin or pile by first spreading some sheets of plastic on the ground to avoid unwanted weeds growing up into your compost. Use a layer of leaves and a layer of fresh lawn grass cuttings alternately with household scraps such as vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags. Be careful not to use bread and grains, meat, grease, or oily foods as these will attract vermin and other unwanted critters.
Enclose your compost pile by building 3 sides to protect it from the wind and rain leaving the forth side open for access. You can use wooden fence poles driven into the ground for this and attache some chicken wire to them or for a more sturdy bin nail some wooden side supports to the uprights.
If you don't want to build your own composting pile there are ready made alternatives including revolving drums that make it easier to aerate your organic gardening compost.
If you are going to create your own compost heap you should do this in early fall as this is the ideal time for starting your organic gardening compost.
Collecting the many leaves falling from the trees this time of year will give you a good base to work with when mixed with other natural ingredients as mentioned previously.
Within 3 - 4 weeks you should have a healthy organic composted pile generating a rich source of nutrients for your organic garden. Just turn it every so often to keep it aerated and keep adding fresh leaves, grass cuttings and household scraps to replenish the mound. Now you have a beneficial use for all those bags of autumn leaves picked up every year. Instead of dragging them to the curb you can utilize them in your organic gardening compost.

Quick Tip #2
At the start of each organic gardening year take some time to sharpen your tools. You will work much more efficiently with a sharp spade than with a dull one. Check the wheel or wheels on your wheelbarrow make sure they are not going to let you down when it's full of heavy soil or potting plants. |
Quick Tip #3
